Day 4: Monkey in the Headlights

As I mentioned yesterday, today Sara and I had to decide if we were going to take the northern route through Albuquerque, NM and Flagstaff, AZ or go the southern route. We took a look at the weather after getting started and discovered that it was going to snow and then rain and then snow in Albuquerque today. Since this car is not really equipped for winter driving, we agreed to take the southern route. Twelve hours later, we’re currently in Deming, NM. (But we only have a 8 or 10 hour drive tomorrow.)

The most annoying thing today has been that Mike’s dog, a black lab, has been having a panic attack basically anytime anything happens on the road, like passing a car we’re going around a corner. While this has been happening previously, today was a whole lot worse. She tried to climb into my lap several times which resulted in her being physically rebuffed. While I’m sure this did not make things better, there weren’t many other options.

Throughout portions of the drive, Sara physically restrained the dog from the back seat, which I’m sure was an unpleasant experience too.

I think we’re going to have to give her a double dose of anxiety medications tomorrow, because we really can’t have her seeking reassurance from the driver.
