El Olam, the Eternal God
Life is often incredibly chaotic. Beyond the variance of my own emotions, thoughts, and experiences, there are other humans. I feel like I’m having a good day if I manage to get my own ducks in row without the outside world interfering. Why?
To be honest, it’s because I’m a control freak. Stability and order that I manage brings me comfort.
I don’t often get that.
In times that are particularly out-of-control, it is incredibly calming to remember that there is an eternal God who is controlling everything, far better than I could.
In fact, the Hebrew translation of El Olam is much more than a simple “infinity.” Rather, the meaning is closer to “the God who intimately understands the fullness of time and space.” That’s a lot of know-how.
Much like Elohim, the Mighty Creator, El Olam reminds me that God is not just everlasting, but also all-knowing. Past, present, and future are all laid before his feet, open to his view.
When life is confusing and uncertain, I hold onto the promise of El Olam. Like the writer in the Psalms, I pray that he will teach me wisdom that I can make choices that lead me along His path.
